Launch planning
How Much Budget Do You Need To Test A Shopify Product?
A launch budget is not just the Shopify plan. Early sellers also need to allow for samples, creative, small tools, ad tests, refunds, and enough time to learn from the numbers.
Budget Categories
- Product samples and shipping.
- Store setup, theme, domain, and essential apps.
- Photography, basic creative, or product page assets.
- Paid ad testing or influencer outreach costs.
- Refund, replacement, and support buffer.
Do Not Spend Before The Margin Works
A larger budget does not fix weak product economics. Before spending on traffic, calculate the contribution margin, break-even ROAS, likely refund drag, and whether bundles can lift average order value.
Use A Learning Budget
The first budget should be framed as a learning test, not a guarantee of sales. The goal is to find out whether the product, offer, and audience show enough signal to justify more work.
When To Pause
Pause before spending more if the product cannot make profit after ads, competitors are much stronger, suppliers look risky, or customers need too much convincing to understand the offer.
Estimate the test budget
