Pricing
How To Price A Shopify Product
Good pricing is not just cost plus a markup. A Shopify product needs enough margin to survive payment fees, shipping, refunds, discounts, and customer acquisition costs.
The Basic Formula
Start with this structure:
Selling price - product cost - shipping - fees - refund allowance - ad cost = profit
Costs To Include
- Product cost or landed cost
- Shipping and fulfilment
- Payment and platform fees
- Packaging or handling
- Expected refunds and returns
- Discounts and promotions
- Ad cost per sale
Target Margin
Many small ecommerce products need a healthy margin because paid traffic, returns, and testing costs are unpredictable. If the margin only works with perfect ads and no refunds, the price is too weak.
Competitor Positioning
A higher price can work if the bundle, guarantee, speed, brand, or product page creates a better reason to buy. If the offer looks identical to cheaper competitors, pricing power is low.
